Audi 90 quattro
Unashamedly copied across from another forum, I hope that's OK:
http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=227628 Its interesting because the quattro rally hstory book by John avenport talks about 90 q rally cars as having about 190-200 Bhp in Group A trim. This thread (and the the links within it) point to at least one works car, as driven by Jimmy McCrae, having 325 Bhp. Anyone know any more? |

The B2 90 quattro's had the 10V engine that developed around the 190-200hp. with throtle bodies this can be increased to about 225 (not according to FIA homologation).
The story you refer to deals with the B3 90 quattro with the 20V Kolb engine. For the 2.3 liter about 280-290 hp is possible, so 325 hp for the 2.5 liter should be possible. Our current rally car is a sister car of the refered B3 90 build for VAG Sweden with Thomas Jansson as driver. Many S1 parts. We started with the throttle bodied 10v and have now the 20V Kolb engine. See our website for some pictures |

Excellent info, thanks. Do you have a link to your website please? Do you have any more info about the car, & particularly the engine spec please?
John Davenport/ Reinhard Klein's book on the quattro rally history definately refers to the B3 90 quattro as having a 2.3 litre n/a engine giving 197 bhp at 6500 rpm (including the one used by Jimmy McCrae on the Granite City Rally) & there's no mention of the Kolb engine. Intriguing. |

Jimmy Macraes car was 280bhp from memory. i only learned about it recently. I know someone who was doing the granite city rally around that time. its his car that ended up in the USA in mid 90s and achieved a fair bit of sucess over there.
To be different i have half an idea after my overseas stint to attempt to build a fast NA 7A 90q. in light of all the imprezas at knockhill it would be nice to compelte with them in the white box

I'll join in on this. The B3 90 that went to the US is MN 9044. It is 325 HP, and while it started life as a 7A, it doesn't much resemble one now. All that remains of the "stock" 7A is the block and the intake manifold. There might be a few odd pieces here or there, but the motor is one of 4 built by Kolb just for that chassis. As I understand 2 were used up during testing, one resides in the car now, and the fourth which was a spare has disappeared.
