Default Gearbox oil confusion

Hi all,

This has probably been covered in the past, but couldn't find anything conclusive by searching the forums.

Would like to check & top up if necessary my quattro gearbox. Am aware of the need for GL4 spec oil, but what is the equivalent to SAE80?

My local spares centre carries EP75W/80 in GL4. Would this be ok?
What do you other quattro owners use?
Many thanks in advance.

Chip fat will do, as long as it melts when hot, should be fine, a bit of sawdust too.

(Disclaimer - joking!)

Yep! Just drain out the chunks of broken pinion gear first, will be quiet as a mouse..

I always thought it was 75/90 for the box GL4 and 75/80 GL5 for the rear diff.

I've sold my Bentley manual so don't have the info to hand

Misschief.........This week's understatement redefined

I thought it was a simple, reasonable & straight forward request for info.
Little did I know what mood some of our fellow enthusiasts would be in
