On my ABY the number is on the head, LHS at the front(as you look at it), not sure if this is the same as the 3B and AAN/ADU ??

Is it 10v or 20v engine you have?

It's a 3B Chris is trying to help me identify. There looks to be a 9 or 10 digit number on the block towards the front on the inlet side with "Germany" above it and what looks to be the Audi & VW logos below.
It's hard to get a direct view & there's corrosion obscuring it, but there doesn't look to be an engine code at the start of it which had me wondering whether I'm looking at the right thing.

Check the head above the exhaust and near to cam cover.....if it's got 3B then a space followed by 6 numbers then there's no need to go looking elsewhere???
But maybe if it's had a 7A head fitted in it's lifetime then this might complicate things!!

7a heads don't have anything stamped there.

Yeah I know, means you could create your own number.....or recreate a stolen engine.
