I have a zinc/nickel kit. It was hit & miss and I got a bit frustrated with it until I was recommended to use an automatic current controller which you can buy for about £10 off ebay.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/B3603-4-Di...item1c3990f593

It transformed the job as it will automatically adjust the current to the set voltage so you get perfect results every time. The 3A current does limit you to smaller items, as the current required is proportional to the surface area of the part being plated.

Here is a little bracket I made & plated with the kit

I use Bilthamber Do-ox to remove rust, then strong degreaser before a final dip in brick acid, then into the plating bath.

The kit comes with GP1 Alkaline cleaner - but you can use patio cleaner/brick acid.

I soda blast the item first - then dip in alkaline cleaner - rinse - dip in pickle solution - rinse then plate.

Error404 is right - it takes a lot of trial and error to get the current right - I seem to have found the ideal setting for small items!

That's the beauty of the current controller - set the voltage 0.9v which is ideal, and it does the rest, altering the current to suit the surface area of the part
