Cheers guys,
Found the sensor, it was connected, cleaned it up, but still doesn't work! Oh well, back to the drawing board.

pretty sure there is a connector behind the driver side headlight for this wire which sometimes gives a bad connection

I thought it as just a single wire that went along the sump back towards the starter wiring Mike?

It goes into that loom yes.
I know my quattro had problems with a connection behind that headlamp for the oil temp sender. It's possible the cq doesn't have that same setup
