Oh yes, that must have been my peg leg stuck on the brake!

The ABS models (if the haynes manual is not lying) have the same diagonal split system as the non ABS ones,

I'd have thought that a master cyl fault would bring on 2 diagonally opposite brakes or all four, not just the fronts.

Try the hoses first, much cheaper than a master cylinder.

Took the car over to the garage today for further inspection and the brakes wouldn't get stuck on at all on the journey there! Went on a 30 minute journey once at the garage and they still seemed fine (possibly sticking very slightly but still a lot, lot better). Put the car on the rollers when we got back and it pulled up fine, would easily pass a MOT and the discs are still ok but pads will need replacing as material is shot!

Anyway, drove the car home and they've started sticking again! It looks like I have a dual master cylinder setup, one brake pipe comes from one, one from the other and they both go into the ABS unit??

As everyone is saying this is a common problem, do I need a repair kit for the master cylinder or a new one completely? If anyone is familiar with this brake setup, what does the cylinder nearer the back do? (as the two cylinders are in line).

on my coupe they didn't stick on all the time i spent replcaing the gearbox and sorting some issues (previous owner said they stuck on) went to take her to get a new MOT and of course the started sticking , new master cylinder fitted and no more problems, If you have trouble finding a decent price for one try contacting "nose" on audifans.net the cheapest i could get one for the 20valve was about £200 ! he got me one delivered for less than £100

Make sure the linkage from the brake pedal where it passes through the bulkhead to the power cylinder, has free play on the fork, this operates the power diverter and with 8 bar of pressure there it only needs a pin size hole open to put pressure on the master cylinder. I have an occasional problem like this with my ur, and will be going down this road before i buy a master cylinder. Probably at combe on saturday in all honesty, as time is short this week !

They both seem to be binding, I suppose it's unlikely both flexi hoses have gone internally but I then it only costs a few quid to put new ones on! Have checked the fluid reservoir, it has the correct fluid.

oldsynth, did you end up replacing the master cylinder in the end then?

Sounds more likely to be the master cylinder now if these are the symptoms!
hi matey, yes I did and it cured the problem straight away....I only had the car for a day before the brakes jammed on. I thought to myself......Is this how its going to be owning an audi ur quattro, and 17 years later..... I can say that it certainly is!!

Took the car out last night for a short drive, seems better as they are not getting stuck on as often but the problem is still there! Going to bleed the system through tonight just in case there is something stuck in there. If there's no success, I will go down the master cylinder route but another cause could be the 'booster' as the Americans call it, which is situated behind the master cylinder. Grrr...
