If it the rear ball joint that fastens to the bottom of the strut by 2 bolts then they are the same for both sides. Easy job and not under pressure unless you have a rear roll bar as I do. Should only take 20-30minutes each side.

These are the early style

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-Ball-Joints-...d=p3286.c0.m14

Thankfully Audi changed the design. Almost every time, one of the bolts will shear off (they're only M8).

These were fitted to the early cars. Yours being a 1989 will have the ones in the other link.

Jack up, remove wheel and secure on a stand.

Undo caliper and tie out the way. This gives you easier access to the pinch bolt.

Undo the pinchbolt and nut. Throw them away as you'll want to fit new ones

Undo the wishbone to subframe nuts / bolts. Use a splitter to extract the ball joint from the base of the strut. Remove the complete assembly.

Best to mount the wishbone on a bench vice and extract the balljoint off the car. Note that rear balljoints are curved and the curve faces the rear of the car

they look like this

cheers for all the info everyone - have been spending ages trying to confirm part no. etc but thinking biggyin is on the money - that my balljoints are handed left & right, since pressed into bolt-on arm, which is what makes them handed L/R

mikes2, again thanks for all the info - & you're right, I don't have the type in your ebay link - I got the part no. from the vendor in biggyin's earlier ebay link (855 407 366A) & unfortunately, I don't think these are right either even though they look v similar. grrrr

does everyone go to audi dealers for their balljoints & pin clamps ? am still shocked at costs . . .

mikes2 - maybe it's my system, but I couldn't get your S2 link to work fully, but have followed the address to the rear balljoint photo on that site & that looks right for my car - lots of useful info on that site on how to strip rear suspension etc, so thanks again for that
