right. i'll have to think about this for a couple of hours.. i looked up the service record and the manifold was off/welded/put back on, exactly 30K miles ago, so, using it as a daily car (for now) i'd be looking at doing this every two years or so.. (if the weld/repair is the problem that has returned)
i will be up in ayr tomorrow anyway meeting friends new dogs and new babies though, so it is an option Mr QKid! will let you know before the day is out. might pop by for a look at some real audis anyway! the turbo you have will be too big i think, WR/MB ones are not the same as the MC, as far as i know. having said that, looks like the last 'job' was done by the old chap who had the car last. i'm sure that it looks like he has forgotten to put at least a couple of nuts back on the manifold when he replaced it and one that wouldn't fit over the weld so with that in mind, and recalling my manifold tickling feather experiment, i'd say that 85% of the gasses are escaping from the gaskets not the weld/crack. it looks like he reused everything apart from the gaskets, no receipts for studs/nuts etc. so that may be why half of them never ended up going back on the car... collecting parts for the job at the moment, the best parts i can find, so, i ask the people of classic audi land... how successful is welding?? and can it be done again? i'm guessing that the welding may weaken the casting the first time around and that grinding it back and doing it again might result in a part that lasts even less than 30K..? i.e. could i have my welded one welded again if indeed it is leaking as well as the gaskets? essay over... so much for keep forum posts short and sweet! i think i read that while registering on retrorides.. |

so there may be some out there! good to know.
hmm. might give the quattrokid manifold a go, if he reads his pm's before he heads out tomorrow. if i get the gasket situation sorted out it can't be nearly as bad as it is now. i can always put a better one on at a later date. suppose i could set up some kind of heath robinson pressure test of some kind on it, before i take the car to bits. then it'll do the job for a while at least.. if its an MB manifold... |

what turbo thread..?
what would happen if you put a 'too bit' turbo on an MC then? you would hit overboost cutout all the time, run lean and burn all your valves out..? sounds good..lol! i have a feeling it'd not be good, different pistons/compression on an ur, i think? |
