A lot of the gearbox issues on these can be attributed to failings in the gearbox ECU.
Due to the ECU's location, transmission fluid finds it's way along the wiring to the ECU, the coating on the circuit board gets compromised, then all havoc breaks loose with the box going into limp mode & throwing up fault codes. Wiring breaks in the ECU are common too. All this can be fixed & relatively cheaply too... Better than unnecessarily 'rebuilding' the gearbox. An Avant 4.2 would is a car I've hankered after before, but logic has always kept me away.
