Default Alternator rebuild

Hi all, anybody every stripped their alternator or re-built it, mine is probably original so getting on a bit, l've bought a new rectifier and bushes for it, i'm hoping to be able to strip it down and fit new bearings and give it a proper clean.

Anyone done this????

Hi Rob. I partly stripped, cleaned & painted mine as it was full of oil & crap from years of cam cover leaks. Never pulled one apart before but it's straightforward enough.

I just laid out all the parts in the order they came off. Just make sure you fully tighten the pulley nut - that was my downfall, leading to recovery off the M25

I did one on my 1985 B2 80 GL many years ago now. It was a company car bought for the memsahib when a new one came along after three years. I changed a front bearing in the alternator and all the cam followers as one or two were a bit noisy. I don't recall any issues but of course it was only 4 or 5 years old when I did the job. Twenty or thirty years plus worth of crud and general decrepitude might make a difference.

Done it several times, it’s straightforward to do

Just take photos as you take it apart and ‘order’ your parts as they come off, pay the little bit extra for decent bearings and it’ll be fine
