I can understand when paint would be better, if the wheels have date-stamps/part number or whatever which are visible and it's a show car then powder-coating will mask these marks slightly. If date stamps are important then go with painting.
If you use the car for what Audi intended and use it then I'd go for powder coating. Also if the wheels have any sort of pitted corrosion or kerb rash then PC will fill these blemishes(just hope that they've had these bits well blasted prior to getting coated!). I had my early style Speedlines' powder coated and lost the wording a bit on the spokes, also the metal centre cap didn't fit right after powder coating due to the extra thickness. If it's 10-spokes just rattle can them, no need to mask Just my thoughts |

Do you have a picture of the wheels in their current state ?
I had ago at spraying some b3 Aero's once , not a particular hard wheel to cut your teeth on as it's mostly flat , anyway just took my time, with increasing grades of sand paper, started with couple of filler primer coats , sanding after each coat , 2 maybe 3 coats of silver (think it was Autoglym silver?) then 4 or 5 coats of laquer .. looked ok imho I would perhaps have even done more coats of laquer..? They probably lasted 4/5 yrs before I started to see blemishes on the laquer. It didn't cost me a busting lot , learnt something new , bit of self satisfaction, & it's all part of enjoying owning a classic..., I'll just re-do them again if I have to

They are 14 inch 16 spoke Ronals.
Sorry no pics, but they have been in a VW silver grey for four years. They look very good when clean and in bright sunlight, otherwise they can give an impression of dirty wheels. No chips or blemishes yet, but the colour doesn't really do the car justice. Thanks for all your input chaps... Last edited by Ringmaster; 25-01-18 at 10:43 PM. |
