1.6 cl engine to 1.8 'cd' engine from a GL...differences?
Right, 1981 cl 1.6 b2 80, and am aquiring a 1.8 gl 'DS' engine for a decent price, not a massive gain but enough to give it a bit more poke, and my 1.6 has a few issues at present.
Dan says the engine may NOT have a carb, and if it does he says he thinks it might be tired. I dont think it has an exhaust either. So my question is, from my complete 1.6 unit, what can I keep onto the 1.8, and what will I need new? e.g. my 1.6 has a recon altenator, nice rocker and air box, water pump is spot on etc... Ideas? Thanks Phil.

Only differences between 1.6 and 1.8 carb engines except for stroke [so different crankshaft and maybe rods/pistons] will be carb. U can keep your alternator, water pump, exhaust etc.

1.6 cl engine to 1.8 'cd' engine from a GL...differences?
Now that is the answer I wanted!
Now for another question then, is there any simple modifications I can make while the engine is out to improve it? I guess I could match the port sizes etc... Are there any better cams that are a swap from another engine or anything? (like the kr cams on the 6a for instance) Thanks so much, now I know all I need is a carb if it hasn't got one, might try and find an upgrade there too.

i know on the 1.6 and 1.8 carb golf engines you could fit a gti camshaft,if your fitting an 1,8 engine you may be able to use 1.8i exhaust manifold and fit a bigger bore down pipe and exhaust, webber carb with a sports air filter the panel type that fits in the original air box

I'm not keen on the exhaust, but the rest might be a goer for now... When you say a webber carb is that stock on the 1.8Gti carb or do you mean an aftermarket twin choke jobby?

GTI 8v engine [basically the same DZ from B2 A80 GTE] has 112 bhp because of fuel injection not manifolds
P.S. Dunno about golfs and B2, all B3 8v engines have the same exhaust, including manifold. |

i didn't say the manifold make all the difference but the injection down pipe has a better flow and the exhaust bore is bigger which helps the engine breath better if using a bigger carb and sports airfilter

1.6 cl engine to 1.8 'cd' engine from a GL...differences?
It made 112bhp in the injection 'digifant' gti as I had one, however the k-jet model in the earlier cars was the same bhp and ran carbs!
Edit: woops no! K-jet was a form of injection, my bad!!
