Default 6speed box into 80 TDI

Is it possible to get a 6 speed gearbox that's mates up to the 1Z TDI?
On motorways my 80 tdi feels like it would benifit from an extra gear to make cruising a bit less of a mission.
Anyone ever done it successfully?

Do you have correct gearbox mated to it? Otherwise it sounds like you're speeding excessively, 100+ mph

There shouldn't be anything special in bolting that 1Z to 01E gearbox, apart from need to source mounts and other parts to put that box in B4. Such combination over here are routinely done by our TDI fans, with quattro boxes, of course, AFAIK the biggest problem is to source flywheel that could accept 240 mm clutch - not because 228 mm wouldn't fit there, but because usually torque is brought to the level where 228 mm is insufficient
