Wrong plugs in it maybe, mixture has not been adjusted since it last passed with good emissions?

Faulty/dirty Air flow meter?
It would cause all the symptoms indicated.

Mine failed on emissions too, ABC same as yours, really fast blast+tested while hot= pass.

A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to have two ABC coupes at the time that one failed emission test.I was advised that my coolant temp sensors were at fault, so swapped them from the other car which had passed a week before.
This improved readings but not enough to pass. I was then advised that the good ole ITALIAN TUNE UP would improve things. Again, better but not enough. At the first fail I asked if my problem was likely to be cat related, or lambda maybe, and was told categorically not. After the third attempt I decided the cat was to be changed, I fitted a new cat at around £110, tested and passed with a near perfect reading on all counts. Remember if you choose a cat, it does not have to be genuine and therefore damned expensive, if available, however a cheaper alternative may not give you as many years potentially. Both my coupes were ABC V6 with manual 5 boxes, a 95 and a 96 Good luck Stuart |

Fitted new cat last year even then it only just scrapped though with him having to repeat it.
The maf on these is in the ecu via a pipe from the inlet manifold, why do Audi do some crazy shit, haven't checked that yet. So going to check the static timing first and replace the oil pump at the same time, then I've found some info on checking the sensors, will also change the idle control valve as it does seam to be idling a little on the low side compared to the past. |

Might be worth checking that the inlet manifold is not partially blocked, there are plastic duct flaps inside it and they can break away and block the airways so to speak, all the lot were broken and partially blocking the manifold on mine. Just loads of torx screws to undo to take it apart. I also took out the plastic block they were originally attached to in mine. Certainly ran much better afterwards.
