Default 1985 B2 Coupe Aerial

Hi, I'm looking for some information about the Aerials that were fitted or are able to be fitted to the B2 Coupe. The one on the car currently I suspect is the original, but it's been snapped off at the base at some point, so the radio is useless. The car still has it's original Blaupunkt Cambridge M23 radio cassette unit fitted, and we've no intention of changing it.

Speaking to my Dad about it, he reckons he had electric aerials on both his Coupes back in the 80s. He says the early car (82 Square lamp model) had an aerial he had to use a switch to operate. But his second car which was an 86 model same as the one we have now had an aerial which went up when the radio was switched on. He says he had this fitted by a friend of his back in the day.

So, what aerials were available and are electric ones easy to fit and wire in? Ideally I'd like to fit an electric one to the car as it would make life easier, and stop it getting snapped if lowered with heavy hands. (Me )

Thanks,
S.

My B2 originally had an electric retractable but it went faulty and was replaced by the previous owner. I have tried to locate an original for years, you'll be able to get a non-original retractable.
Check inside the boot wing for wiring, live, earth and co-ax then it should function with the radio but check whether the new aerial is the correct polarity

Hi ironjaw.

Aerials on GTs were from a firm called Fuba. It was available as a manual aerial, and a very expensive at the time (& still is) electric version. The electric aerial is very hard to come by - there's one on German eBay for 900 euros! The same aerial was used in the early nineties on Audi b4 cabs I believe, but the layout had changed, and the aerial was a lot longer. The original for the gts and urs was a lot squatter, so that it still fitted with the spare wheel in the boot. Your find that eBay sellers will advertise the b4 cab versions as being able to fit the ur and gt - im not sure it will fit though with the spare wheel. Interestingly the part numbers are identical.

Very occasionally I see both types of aerial on eBay, but they do command high prices....

Some additional and useful info can be found here:

Wow, I didn’t think an aerial could cost so much!! I’ll have to have a closer look at the one fitted in the car and see what type it is. I’ll also look for the wires, thanks for the tip.

My 90 20v came with an electric aerial in 1994 but as time went by, it got bent in the slipstream and stopped retracting. Company wouldn't stump up for a direct replacement so have had a manual one ever since. Radio has always worked well with only the first section showing - top or bottom - it doesn't matter.
Not worth the outlay for an electric one.

Speedy Guy! Only Joking!

I'm going to do a load of work on the car tomorrow, so I'll look at the aerial and see what options I've got. But to be honest anything would be better than the vicious little stump we have currently, which likes to ruin wash mitts and cut fingers!
