Default The Future of Motoring

So, no new Petrol/Diesel cars from 2040 with a view to all P/D cars off our roads by 2050.

Really?

What of Classic Car owners? Will they be allowed on the roads?
Will they still be able to get fuel?
How long before they invent a battery powerful enough to power a lorry?

I guess someone will have to continue producing fuel as I don't see Airliners flying on batteries or many other countries being able to go entirely electric!

Its a fad driven by co2 eco bullshit.

The costs, range, charge time of any replacement vehicle have to be similar to present day stuff or itll not catch on.

I recall not so long back a police force went eco nonsense and bought some nissan leafs for their patrol cars, only thing was when the weather turned icy the buggers wouldnt charge and couldnt be used.Well doh!

Its all stupidity driven by green menatalism.
The elcetricity is going to come from where id like to know?
Given that windymills dont give reliable outputs at anything like that of coal or gas or nuclear, and solar dont work at night... and when youre charging from coal or gas youre still outputting what? C02 ? oh dear..... morons in charge of the asylum again.

Where's the electricity coming from is exactly what i was thinking when it hit the news yesterday. I mean.......... don't make me laugh!

Governments of all persuasions have ducked the electricity problem this country has faced for at least the last 2 decades knowing full well that the Nuclear power plants we have are at the end of their working life. Knowing all of this government have only last year signed a deal for the first Nuclear plant and that won't come on stream until what the government wants by 2025. We all know that won't happen! Currently today we can barely keep up with demand with todays infrastructure and that's only just about managing because we all switched to low energy light bulbs and eco standby appliances etc.

The elephant in the room is Diesel, it's far more polluting than petrol, and of course we have our champions the European Commission to thank for that, pushing it for their major manufacturers of diesel engines Peugeot and VAG back in the 90's extolling it's green virtues. How convenient for the European Commission and it's 2 major protagonists, France and Germany's diesel industries but the cats out of the bag now. It's too late, the damage is already been and is being done on a daily basis!

The ban by 2040 of all diesel and petrol cars won't happen in the terms of what we think it means or they will tell us. Industry isn't set up for this new technology nor is it good enough to take over! In my opinion diesel should be scrapped within 5 years to give people chance to cut their cloth accordingly. This wouldn't cause major upheaval, engine plants all around the world would carry on and produce petrol engines instead keeping the workforce, and life as we know it, yet at the same time decreasing harmful pollution by at least 70%?? Diesel stinks, it's extremely dirty, clogs up engines with carbon and the pollution given of is killing people especially in urban areas.

Te recap, i wouldn't worry too much about the governments statement it won't be possible to achieve this goal. It's just an aspiration and in any case just ban diesel, far far less pollution and everything continues as is for industry until the day Electric cars are perfected and a gradual phasing in as public demand pics up.

Have a good day peeps!

That's the date they must stop selling cars powered by fossil fuels so fuel will remain available long after that date which will be long after l've shuffled of this planet.
Also by that time with the way the technology is accelerating we'll all be driving alternative fuel cars that'll drive themselves

Regardless of your political persuasion this was an announcement by a man who had just got in the job, and frankly on his past performance you can't believe a word he says.

More to the point it's doubtful that any of the current MPs will be around by 2040.

The big question is with this filling all the news air time, what is the news story that didn't get told?

I agree with this interpretation of how things are going to go.

The writing is already (clearly) on the wall for the IC engine as is.

It might happen one day, but not in our lifetime so I'm not worried, sure there will be a gradual trend to hybrid and electric motors over time. The infrastructure simply isn't there to make it possible even in 23 years. They will probably offer incentives to switch much like the scrappage scheme but that will only be relevant to those considering buying a new car. Currently the hybrids are more expensive than the conventional equivalent and the majority are as ugly as ****. Have you seen the new Prius for example.
