What about the 2.0 20vt? Would imagine they are not too hard to find and some fantastic power out of them. I think Doug at MRC in Banbury just got over 700bhp out of one using standard internals.
Keith Murray at Dialynx also runs that engine in his hill sprint car with some serious power.
Lots of options if you look around.

I have but cost is a factor to me at the minute, I have a diesel 530d running 420bhp/600lb/ft and over £20k sank into so I've been down this route before plus I already have the donor 1.8 20vt engine, omex ecu and ancillaries. I'm not after all out power, just something reliable and tuneable with readily available parts. The B4 saloon donor with the engine in at the minute is literally undriveable, it pops, bangs and wheel spins in every gear so it will be getting de-tuned for comfort driving
