I do my own wheel bearings, my wife's Golf I Cab seem to "eat" a lot of them (cheap and expensive regardless), some may last 14 days and others 1 year - No, don't need alignment and tyre wear is uniform. The rest of the car has done close to 300,000 miles.

If you do not have a 2T press or a special toolkit like this...

then let the mechanic do it... I've also seen damaged hubs from one of the shells inside the bearing seizing up and then the hub needs replacement. Parts er quite cheap though.

Oh, I'm in IT and in risk of wearing out my fingertips whilst ruining my cholesterol by sitting down and drinking coffee... Getting off of the chair and under the car is how I survive

Does it whine at all speeds?
Mine would drone above 35mph before I replaced the wheel bearing.
That was the only symptom - I could not tell anything was wrong in a static inspection.

OEM replacements were about £50 I think. Consider if cheaper alternatives include a new circlip and driveshaft nut.

I'm inclined to agree.

That's a tad optimistic. You could spend that long getting the driveshaft nut undone.

If you go down the diy route this may be useful

At about 30mph the drone comes in ,,, I think my suspicions are right by your replys it is more likely the wheel bearing

Wheel bearing can be a bit tricky to work out what side of the car the noise is coming from, but the rule of thumb is change the cheap parts first, do not go removing gear boxes if you are not positive that is the problem, buy the time you get to the bottom of the whine you will probably find a new noise in the car, that's just old cars.

Glad you're all sorted Ivor but I would have agreed with you if I'd seen this sooner, that's definitely a wheel bearing. Gearbox me arse, chancer more like!

Hello Jack

I too am pleased to learn you got this sorted, it must be a relief to not worry about a big gearbox job now.

I am in Hertfordshire, near your neck of the woods, and it would be very handy to know where you got this done...may I ask exactly which garage helped you?
