6 Speed Conversion
As it says in the thread, any one actually done one ?
Not like I new more work and another project, but it could be put in the " to be done" section of my lists. First real big motorway trip for the Coupe the weekend, from Reading to Grays in Essex and back, all via shi??y M25, although on the way back on Sunday is was real easy and free flowing. Car went like a dream and never missed a beat, but after having a 6 speed BMW I thought the Coupe might have benefited from a 6 speed, especially where the motorways were more or less level and flat and driving was just off throttle to speak. I have had a search but cant actually find anyone that has said " yep done it, and it is great/cr@p" Lots of threads with people saying they are going to do it but cant actually find anyone who has actually done it and driven with it. For info the car is a 1991 2.3 20V 7A, so boys and girls anyone any thoughts and tips ? Cheers David |

You have an engine which has been optimized to run at rather high revs. It's even likely that it has rather low gearing, made for 2.3 10v engine. It is possible to fit 01E FWD six speed gearbox, but you will end up still driving in fifth or, if using sixth, you'll find out that the engine will consume more fuel and be less able to cope with load. More or less that is the reason why you can't find anyone who has done that. Audi engineers weren't idiots, cluelessly choosing gear ratios.

Many thanks but well unless you ask you never know.
As for the Audi engineers not being idiots, I doubt idiots but some of the finished trim and OE fixings designs leave something to be desired at times. Ciao Bella Last edited by Davids; 18-09-17 at 03:24 PM. |

This question pops up from time to time, only usually someone asks about swapping in taller ratio five speed box.
As for trims etc - look at vw and BMW 3 series of the period and think again |

My Audi A2 TDI 90 has been converted to 6 speed .
When to DMF and clutch went at 115k . I took it to Tony at A2cars in MK He removed gearbox from car and took it a company near Munich who convert any VW/Audi box from 5 to 6 speed this includes full reconditioning and choice 5th and 6th ratios. With a casting on end of box My rpm at 70 mph dropped from 2250 rpm to 1750 rpm in sixth Mpg on a long motorway run is between 65 to 80 mpg Cost for my gearbox was just over £1,000 I would say lack of a 6 speed box more likely Audi accountant than engineers Also got 6 speed option on my 94 Audi 100 Tdi Last edited by terrywindy1; 18-09-17 at 05:38 PM. |
