Went to see and enjoyed the film, but I think they missed an opportunity to make it Britain's answer to Saving Private Ryan.

Surprised they didn't use more CGI and considering what happened on the outskirts of the town I expected to see some infantry combat, to show what our chaps and the French did.

Some details could have been improved ie, at the film's start actually mention the German Army rather than "The enemy" had driven the allies to the sea. Don't assume everyone knows who was fighting who back then. And, why use a railway carriage with 1990's vintage upholstery when the likes of the Bluebell Railway is available for filming?

Anyway, rant over.

Saw it at the Imax in Glasgow on Tuesday. Broadstrokes were good, the odd cheesy/contrived moment but on the whole I thought it paid the topic a decent service.

Lots of detail stuff wrong (1990's destroyers with radar, British Rail carriages etc etc the RAF actually fighting over the beaches - I thought Nolan had an obvious axe to grind here) but only obvious to your anorak on the subject.

I enjoyed it.

Saw it last weekend and I have to say I was left a bit confused after all the hype in the Meejah about it.
The film concentrated on the actual evacuation from three viewpoints:
  1. The terrified young squaddie desperate to get away
  2. The Spitfire pilot
  3. The "little ship" skipper
There was no background to explain why Dunkirk took on such significance, assuming the audience already knew that and I was very disappointed in the glaring inaccuracies, some of which have already been mentioned.
One thing that did surprise me though was that there was no mention of the Hurricane which was the aircraft that attempted to "do for" the Stukas at low level. Many Hurricane pilots lost their lives over northern France and Belgium. Spitfires were used at higher altitudes to go for the escorting German fighters. I am not sure that a Spitfire could glide with a dead engine for the distance portrayed from the altitude it was shown at and still land wheels down. I'm also pretty sure that a Spit ditching into the sea would trip on the glycol radiator and nosedive instead of landing perfectly flat and sinking dead level.
Despite these comments, the film is a pretty accurate portrayal of events from a very concentrated viewpoint, deliberately NOT mentioning characters by name so as not to invoke criticism of their actions which are very well documented in official records.
That period of history is one of those I have studied in some detail as is some of the Great War history.

Saw the film earlier today and although it wasn't what I was expecting I really enjoyed it
I agree with the comments made by other reviewers especially the over-hype of The Spitfire which at this stage of the war hadn't yet attained its mythical status, although Tom Hardys plane seemed to have magical capabilities including firing more ammo than his whole section would have been capable of

Never seen a film in an imax cinema. Talk about real and being there.Toooo much base for me the floor and your seats vibrating with the lower registers otherwise incredible sound to the movie. I enjoyed it, it's a gripping ride but as said earlier not what i expected. The overall feeling the film had on me was the stark realism of how horrific war is.Very well done i thought! Oh and some stunning Spitfires sequences to the very end!
