Default 10v engine noise

Hello!

Any experts who can help me indentify what could make this kind of noise, it doesn't sound normal to me.
On cold start it will appear after ca: 2 minutes.

Best Regards, Emil

I’m betting it goes up and down in frequency with the engine rpm, right?

Ours spun a rod bearing a few years ago and it was a similar racket. If you have a long screwdriver, use it like a stethoscope, placing it on various points on the engine and to your ear, hopefully you’ll find the approximate area, that’ll at least point you in the right direction.

I’d be tempted to drain the oil and check the filter for metal flakes as well.

It is clearly not happy

I can’t believe it was 10 years ago we did ours....

I will start with drain the oil and check the filter for metal flakes.

When ours failed it was around 125k miles, 25-years old and untouched mechanically from new. It’d run most of its life with the dreaded zener diode mod ECU. We’d never been afraid to “drive it” either. So couldn’t grumble really.

Ultimately, the original engine went back in with oversized pistons.

I wouldn’t panic just yet, it could be a multitude of other things, but the ‘starts after a couple of minutes’ from cold is familiar. On ours we guessed that as the oil warmed and thinned it allowed the surfaces to ‘interfere’ and knock.
