Push rod engines..
Hello, being so youthful and sprightly (not) I have never maintained a push rod engine until now, I'm wondering about maintenance intervals for adjusting them and if the are way out can that dramatically effect performance?
It's an industrial toyota forklift truck engine in a scooby doo mystery machine, I know it's meant to be slow but jesus.. 0-60 in about a minute, if you're lucky! It's an auto box and doesn't always change so quickly, I've taken the slack out of the kick down cable but don't want to push it too much with the trans. fluid pressures. I'm going to get the box hot flushed soon but from rest it's as if it's hauling a jumbo jet around. 3.5K revs and it takes off like a rocket! I'm presuming it's just not using first gear but don't want the rods to pop out through the side of the block one day! Thanks for any advice. p.s. import and the only workshop manuals made were written in Russian, so.. although I'd love to learn Russian, I don't have time at the moment. |

My old mini and vw air cooled engines were push rod. If there's to big a gap then the valves are not opening correctly thus limiting fuel and exhaust thus lower power. Get a set of feeler gauges and measure the gap on the closed valves and compare to the manufactures info. Just a thought.

BMC -- A series and B series were adjusted every 6000 miles at each service - - quick and easy to keep correct - - as above gap is important
