Castle Combe .
The morning practice session went well, in fact the car was pulling much stronger and longer through all the gears. At the end of the main straight it used to start running out of puff and only made about 5000rpm. This time we were seeing over 5500rpm and it was still pulling . That equats to "quite fast" in top gear, especially with the higher gearing of the 235/50 tyres . At the start of my first timed run the gear linkage popped off leaving me with only 3rd and 4th. The little adjustable double ended link had parted company from the ball . It was OK for Andy's first timed run but he caught another car and lined up for re-run. This time the linkage popped off the actuator ball leaving him with 1st and 2nd. It took him quite a while to do a lap in second gear . Investigations found that we had lost one of the two bolts from the front engine snub. It's now a straight bar off the side of the block into a cup on the front aluminium cross bar (a la works style). The engine must have rocked backwards on it's new stiff engine mounts with the give in the standard gearbox mounts and hence the gear linkage popped off So, a rethink on the front snub mounting, some new stiff gearbox mounts, and new plastic bits for the gear linkage. The gear linkage problem was caused by the other issues but it is a bit tired and comes apart a little too easy. We have looked at doing the rear gearbox mount like the works cars. It's a sort of rubber mounted collar that bolts to the very rear of the gearbox where the prop shaft comes out. It then bolts directly to the tunnel. Maybe one day! At least it's not another engine rebuild like this time last year .

Found that, as a consequence of loosing the front snub, the engine mounts ripped themselves apart .
These were the new stiff 034 motorsport ones. I suppose doing sprint starts without a front engine mount to hold it down is a bit extreme, but I wouldn't have expected them to part after one go. The ones we took off were the originals AFAIK. They were a bit tired and floppy but at least they held on to the engine.

Tim, Not to hi-jack the thread, but what snubber did you build and what did you attach it to ? Im just starting my Rally bars and snubber mount... The one that was on mine just limited upward movement, but I see on the rally cars and other they supported the snubber 360 degrees... Tim M |

Hi Tim,
We went along the lines of the works cars with a cylindrical cup attached to the spotlight bar. It really ties the front of the engine down but I think it takes a lot of stress. Here's a picture I took of the empty engine bay of Suttons group 4 shell to give you some guidance .
