Pardon my complete ignorance msh, but I'm looking and not seeing

I'm guessing that the main wire is to bypass the possible open circuit but what is the black wire connected to? Power source or voltmeter perhaps?

Like msh has put only instead of jumpering the relay itself, jumper the two contacts in the fusebox that correlate to those on the relay.

Well two different second hand 213 relays tried and the problem persists so its being placed in the hands of the professionals tomorrow.

I'm now leaning towards Hanuman's ignition switch suggestion as all the non operating items only work with ignition on, but we will see

Journey to the garage should be interesting with no indicators, but its an Audi after all. Indicator use optional

All sorted and back on the road

It turned out to be the ignition switch which cost £35 and an hours labour. So all in all not too bad
