I haven't tried the relay yet, but have taken the switch apart and cleaned the connections. Unfortunately that didn’t work, they looked well worn though.

As for the relay, you can either open it up and look for broken joints, or go upgrade path and get mk3 golf wiper relay with number 99 on top.

It's easier to say where you can't put one - likely newer cars with wiper relay which is in double size, or it's functions have been taken over by some control unit.

A couple of months ago I had a side job to sort out electrics of 20 years old Valmet tractor, and you guess what - yeah, you could put mk3 relay there too...

that would have to be the most obscure place one has ever been fitted
