Only if you plan to do 10,000 miles a year.

I remember going from an 80 GT with carb set up back in 1983 to a new Mk 1 Golf GTI 1800 and honestly I was sold for life of fuel injection.
Did dabble with carb version of the Coupe GT and had problems with that as well so it was back to an injected Coupe as soon as I could afford one.
Old habits die hard!

I'm swaying more and more towards getting one I must admit, with my eye still on the 1.8S as it did look nice and isn't a million miles away from me.

As far as I'm aware the carb is a Pierburg which I've heard can be a bit of a pain with people converting to a Weber, however?

What sort of MPG can I expect? I've read that with a light foot you can achieve decent MPG in the 40s???. The roads I will be travelling will range from 30 to 70 averaging on probably 50 with some roundabouts.

Fuel consumption will be very good on this 1.8S with a lightfoot that's if the Pierburg carb is running right. Fuel injection is good for surebut the old 1.9 cd (WN) 5cyl saloon i owned 20 years ago ran on an IB3 carb can't remember if it was Pierburg but most probably was and it sounded much nicer than the fuel injected 2.0 type 85 coupe that a friend had. I like both, carb is completely silent where as injection you get that ticking noise as they fire.

If you buy the car i would factor in as part of your service regime to buy a Carb rebuild kit.You may need it sooner than later as the car may not be running perfect now? By the way,........... the Pierburg on your car will be the Zenith of Carburettor technology. The last of the last Carbs were quite sophisticated in their design to keep emissions down.

Because I somehow approximately remember what would be recommended manufacturers for various stuff - and I cannot remember ever heard anyone recommending Febi to someone for something. If you cannot answer to my question - well - how can you recommend to anyone manufacturer whose products you're not using?

As for the point that Febi is OEM for various manufacturers - that means nothing - because there are three possible relationship with Original parts and OEM parts - first - the one you hope for - OEM parts have the same quality as original parts - second - original parts are of inferior quality than OEM parts - I hope rare, but it's possible - third - original parts are of higher quality than OEM parts. Third option is quite real - for example, I've been told by trusted parts seller that Bosch brand stuff is of lower quality than Bosch made VAG original parts.

Many many years ago I owned a Coupe GT with the 1.8i engine and 40mpg was achievable on longer runs without trying too hard.

As for the parts, do not confuse Febi with Febi-Bilstein - 2 different companies

Ive been banging on about not buying Febi for years but it always falls on deaf ears.

Buy once and be done with it not twice and costing 2 x labour.

I do know about their quality because I use their stuff regularly

It’s been right and as OEM every time

http://www.classic-audi.co.uk/forum/...ad.php?t=33601

If it’s been replaced and Febi made it that’s where it came from.

It’s absolutely spot on quality wise.

Other suppliers are available etc etc but I’m happy they know what they are doing
