The relatively low temperature (typically 450 degrees celsius) used in hot dip galvanizing does not make any difference to the tensile properties of mild steel. There are two reasons car manufacturers generally don't galvanize components, firstly the significant extra cost involved which would obviously have to be added to the finished product, and secondly the existing processes used for rust protection of components are deemed adequate for the relatively short life of most vehicles.

And now for the rear.
The buying of bits has started, track-control-arms first. I have a B2 rear subframe which is in very good condition, will be re-positioning the TCA mounts and adding ARB mounts.....and will get it galvanized.
Will do the job over the summer but need to get more bits first:-
Suspension arms, polly bushes for arms and subframe I think, ball joints, shockers, strut tops, wheel bearings.
Brakes are good though!
Will probably put new seals in the diff while it's out.

It's been a while.........now for the rear.
Bought front and rear subframes from Colin(top bloke, a true Audi Gent!), rear one was solid except for a bit of rot at the diff mount bracket?.....and one of the TCA brackets.......strange?.....it was like cement had got lodged in there and corrosion had got hold.........but easy repair and while I had the welder in hand I reinforced a few bits.

Here it is after blasting and welding.

A trip to the galvanizers soon.
