if you google blower heater resistor or something similar, you will find a company that repair/replace with next day delivery iirc. early audis 80/a4 etc are about £13.

yeah £13.00 for a part costing a quid, hmmmm, the thermal fuse once you have taken the resistor pack out is pretty obvious as it sits on two pieces of wire below the resistor pack. Done mine on the cq and it works a treat, was a bit of a sod to solder but got there in the end.

Just did this and sadly still only have heaters blowing on 4. Im sure I did solder it the right way. Can there be any other cause??

Did you checked continuity of that fuse after soldering? Otherwise, if resistor pack itself is good and fuse is also good, there's switch and nothing else. But when switch fails, usually remains 3d and 4th speeds.
