I have DSSR nozzles on my C4 now. I went for 0.240 and they make very big difference! Really can recommend.
You just need some injector specialist who can swap them for You.

Do you want similiar power to the 170bhp VRS?

Manifolds/turbo/injectors/remap and supporting mods should get you there from what I remember. I would use a VNT turbo if possible as it will have a broader powerband, which is what makes modern diesels good, boosting almost off idle. Older big turbo would be simpler, but more peaky.

Yes, a B5 A4 is a "better" car; handling, roadholding, safety, smoother, quieter, headlights, air con, more power etc etc. B5s are currently like 80s were a few years ago, readily avaliable and cheap.

80 is cheaper/easier to keep running for general maintenance items, but will have more age related issues. Full arm kit for an A4!

I would generally rather fix an 80 due to simplicity (and probably familiarity), but would choose to drive the A4 on a long run every time I am afraid.

I have had B4 80 1.9tdi 90, B5 A4 1.9tdi quattro 110 and B6 A4 1.9tdi quattro 130 for reference.

Anyway its classic-audi, when did common sense come in to it! Its about enjoyment

Full link kit for B5/B6 - what is there so special? Must be around 200 quid for all 10 parts, for some good brand links. I guess the problem is that roads in UK are too good - over here changing whole link kit is something that someone who regularly drives B5 or newer car does once per 2-3 years

Hi guys. Really sorry for the delay replying, been a few very busy days with work.
Anyway, I've been chatting to a fella who may be selling off a few parts to improve the 1Z. I have to talk to him again to find out exactly what he has. but he definitely has bigger injectors and turbo, and possibly some more bits to help.
I think in the long run I will just stick with the 1Z purely for simplicity and basic repair ability.
As in power, I'd be very happy to get it near 130-140bhp and keep it reliable.
Really happy to be getting the chance to buy this car back.
I've been to Germany three times and Ireland at least six times in my previous ownership of this car and never found it too bad on long journeys. Would have been nice to have cruise control, but that could be installed as it's the last of the B4 tdi's which supported cruise control.

I believe all of the 1.9 tdi engines are excellent, the 1Z being the mother of all.
I currently have a 52 plate A6 Avant 1.9tdi 5spd man with 182500 mi, my wife has a 04 A6 Avant 1.9tdi 5spd with 179k, both the PD130 AWX engines. Brilliant and reliable engine. I don't know what's the problem with the injectors - None of mine has any smoking, starting or consumption issues. If there was a problematic engine that would be Ford's 2.0TDCi from the MK3 mondeo. Now the delphi injectors in that are crap, the DMF fails on every one of these and many other problems.
We also had an X reg A4 1.9 tdi 115 with only about 126k - very good, my wife just wanted an A6 with lots more space, like mine. Sold to my parents for only 700 (it cost me about that including expenditures, bought dirt cheap on auction ). They now have two X reg identical (both specs and colour) A4 B5 1.9 tdi's, the other at around 186k miles.
Not a fault with these PD engines. I remember everybody being scared that these will fail and will be so expensive to repair - the latter might be true but they just don't fail. Use the correct oil in correct intervals and that's it.
Suspension parts are not cheap that's right. Replaced all the front lower ones on my A6 and of the one which has the shocks on needed the more expensive option from eurocarparts as the cheaper version didn't fit - mine has the red shocks which I've been told are part of the sport suspension option - the hole for it in the hub is a tiny bit smaller.
We love all 4 of our PD engined cars.

As for OP's 1Z - stick with it and tune that, lot simpler - but I see decision of keeping it has already been made

Ref PD engine, I think it's the wiring to the injectors that can be the problem, wiring runs inside the cam cover and is susceptible to degradation from heat and being in contact with oil?

Have you done any other mods to your C4 engine or just the nozzle swap?

..........and so it came to pass, I now own(well almost!.....as I haven't paid for it yet) this late model estate with 4 cylinders of turbo diesel goodness!
While it has just shy of 200k on the clock it is from pedigree stock having been owned by Andy10v's Dad !!
A quick look around it reveals it's had new rear calipers at some point, a leaky rear shocker, a split CV boot, the original exhaust?!, lower ball-joint at o/s/f, 1 new brake flex hose and 2 pipes on the front, a directional tyre on n/s which I've now swapped to o/s, a CD player and boost gauge fitted to the centre vent........so it must be space ship fast!!
Came with some new spare parts; front discs and pads which I've fitted today, a thermostat, fuel and oil filters.
Also came with a few dents and scuffs, mould inside and a scent which I intend to change!
Love it !!
