Hi Ben, yes that would be me. Hope you are happy with them.
I've returned my 1985 WR to as near standard as possible so these were surplus. Mine has replacement Koni shocks fitted by the previous owner along with the springs you now have. I might have the boxes with part numbers if you need a bit more detail. Cheers Geoff

Hi Geoff, yes very happy thanks although the standard springs are now rattling in the mounts (mainly the front ones), hence my question to you! If you could please dig out any more information I'd be truly grateful

I'll take a look when I finish work tonight, see if I have the boxes.
Fairly certain I got spare (maybe standard) shocks with the car and this is what they were in. Are you thinking the std ones might be too long?

Hi Ben,
So the shocks currently on my car are Koni Sport Yellow Front 86-2086SPORT Rear 86-2087SPORT Quoting directly from the Koni website "KONI Sport 'Yellow' shocks offer the same exceptional road-holding as the Classic 'Red' shocks, but are especially designed for cars that are fitted with lowering springs which are shorter than the original springs" So sounds from me they could be a shorter shock than stock items. I have to say they are not causing me any issues with the standard springs and I like their damping characteristics. Hope this is of help to you. Geoff

I did this to death a few years back on an uprated springs group buy.
Those are the same Koni shocks I have. They work perfectly as standard with standard springs. If your uprated springs are shorter than the standard springs (when uncompressed), the fronts will be loose in the struts with the Konis at full extension, the rear springs may also be loose if your springs are much shorter than standard. The fix for this is to take them to a Koni agent (I found one in Newbury) who can open the shocks and change / add some spacers inside to limit the extended length of the Konis as you like. It wasn't expensive to have done (something like £10-£15 a strut). The springs we had made in the group buy were loose in the Konis but not in Bilsteins. H&R springs may be loose in both - the Konis can be shortened easily - don't know about the Bilsteins. If you go with those Konis, they are adjustable (only for rebound rate). Set the fronts at about 50% and the rears one turn stiffer on the rebound. This limits dive under braking. If you set the Konis too stiff on the rebound, they can "jack down" - the strut can compress quicker than it can rebound, so a series of bumps can make them bottom out. |

Can anyone tell me whether the MB has 50mm or 55mm front struts please? I'm talking to a shock absorber supplier to see what they have to offer and they have asked this?
