Default buying a car that is sorned?

A friend of mine wants to buy a car, and needs me to drive it back home for him. Unfortunatly it's not taxed or insured by the previous owner, but it does have an MOT .

Problem is its over 3 hours away, so we will need to decide there and then if we want it or not.

Question 1) What should I do? Can I Insure it for just for a day to get it TAXED? or do I need to insure it for longer?

Question 2) The thing I'm most confused about tho, is the TAX situation. How can we TAX it if we are not the registered keeper on the day? Or is there a way to transfer ownership/registered keeper on the SAME day as sale, AND TAX it there and then before we drive it away?

I'm not so sure that the DVLA are checking on insurance on their data base these days, but regarding tax, just take the green slip from the right hand side of the V5c into a Post Office that issues car tax and they will tax the car for you immeadiately.
If you have a good broker for insurance, he will probably organise cover for you for the day. Otherwise, explain to your own insurance company what you wish to do and I think they may be prepared to cover you for 24 hours.

I stand to be corrected.

You insure it prior to collecting it and in the new owner section of the logbook there is a number and you tax if there and then online when you collect it or even prior to collection ... Simple ...I've just done it

unless anyone knows otherwise, you cannot tax online if there is no insurance registered for the vehicle. it doesn't necessarily mean that its your insurance, simply an insurance marker from the insurance database. Likewise, no MOT registered, no tax.

So insuring on the morning may not work if the database isn't promptly updated. The system is not perfect. I've been pulled over for 'suspected' no insurance, because the ANPR camera on a plod vehicle flagged my car up. I was insured, though; paper/email docs are worth carrying.

It's probably worth using the tried and tested post office method, if that still exists.
If in doubt, call DVLA before you go.
