The new Sikorsky CoastGuard helicopter is outside over the bay showing itself off after
taking over from HMS Gannet (SeaKing) - looks very impressive and a nice sound too!

The only fanny we can see here is you burning loads of oil when you needn't. I'll get Lee to put some 10W/40 in your old tub, that might sort out it's thirst for oil. Fanny indeed!

They keep trying to get me to take that longlife 5w-30 stuff for my poverty spec 5 pot (non turbo), everytime I ask for the 5w-40 platinum at the local vw stealership!

Unlike Amy Winehouse, I do say NO,NO,NO! lol

I think the hand book is wrong, sorry... That's bollocks...

You'll run low oil pressure and the tappets will chatter like a Women's Institute convention at an Anne Summers Promotion...

7A CQ uses no oil.....nothing.....not a drop(10/40 semi I think, and changed once a year, most I've done in a year was about 3200 I think)
S2, hasn't used any oil.....yet. Am I doing something wrong?

Just keep doing that you are doing John They should not be burning any oil if all is well.

10/40 is spot on, I use 10-50 or 60 for track work, but no need for normal road use. (want the oil to be an appropriate thickness at operating temperature)

5w 30 will flow better at a cold start than 10w 40, it will also be thinner at operating temperature.

At 100*C

SAE 30 = 9.3 to less than 12.5cst
SAE 40 = 12.5 to less than 16.3cst

Until

You start burning oil.

Then
Keep lubrication within spec until oil consumption is intolerable.

Then
Rebuild engine to tightest spec and tolerance available.

Then
Give an informed opinion on oil spec with a newly rebuilt motor, and start from the beginning.

Just about all of the higher performance (Audi) motors out there are way beyond the design life and understanding of the manufacturer, who really couldn't give a sh1t beyond 10 years. Do what you want, given the available knowledge, and make an informed decision.

There's a good chance that oil is weeping past as many seals as it is via oil rings....

I used 15w/30 in The Tub and 10w/30 Castrol GTX in the Helmet - whatever's reduced and has "Castrol" on it, I'll use it! Well, maybe not the lawnmower stuff right enough . .
