First thing I would do is isolate the extension ring circuit so there's no voltage/current running through it then find the spur . Then disconnect it and disconnect it where it comes into the garage . You can then test that piece of cable (ideally with a mega ) but use a meter first .
Garage wants to be on its own circuit going through an RCD .
Now worried as what pokes out of the concrete.... some grey twin cable!!

Think I'm gonna call someone with the tools and knowhow!

Nothing of help, but our garage had an unexplainable trip about two months ago, puzzled me for at least an hour! Turned out that there was a slug (!) inside a four way adapter that was plugged in, in the garage. it must have crawled in through one of the holes where the plug/pins go in. Don't know how it got in there because it was fekn huge!! It was shorting out the metal bits inside, 240v through the body. What confused me was I left it, thought i'll scrape it out once it's dried to a crisp, went back the next day and the bugger was gone. Off to cause more havoc somewhere else.

It was a pretty dangerous slug! Last seen bungee jumping off of the 400v overhead cables which feed the house.

Not sure if it did or not, I didn't get talking to it in all the drama, but it was definitely either brave, or stupid.

Garage elastic trickery is now fixed.

Turned out the security light and/or proximity sensor at the front of the garage had a short through water ingress. Disabled that line and now the garage has full working lighting and electrics again. All sorted for teh grand total of nowt (the driveway security light and sensor was never used in the first place!)
