5,4,3,2,1, None.
Lost all the gears on the 90 yesterday in a strange fashion, one at a time until I came to a standstill. Luckily I was on the driveway by the time I came to a standstill.
Had a chat with Ian (ISimmo) last night via the medium of text who confirmed my suspicions and offered up the possibility of the main linkage rod having worked loose due to packed snow and ice restricting movement and posed the question, had I bellied the old girl out in the snow. 100% yes is the answer whilst trying to impersonate Mr Tonks driving a Discovery a couple of weeks ago when the snow was particularly deep!! This clearly had loosened the locking bolt a little and over the last week or so it's worked loose allowing the linkage to finally drop off. Luckily the bolt hadn't fell out! Linkage back on, loctite applied an hey presto, as if by magic, the shop keeper appears....no... I meant got the gears back Just thought I'd post in case anyone else has a similar issue, certainly worth checking your bolt for tightness as it was just as Ian suggested, I'd gone all floppy underneath!!

Do we have a "known solutions to problems" section of this forum?
It's great that you've posted the problem and solution but I'm now thinking how useful it would be to have an area where we can look up instances where people have had the same problem and the solutions that were found. I know that would certainly help me being not overly mechanically minded and not having any trusted audi specialists in the area to rely on!
