Default shifting linkage confusion..(??)

hello

100 turbo again.

(have 2 different linkages here so cant take the other one apart to see how its supposed to work)

the linkage is made up of basically 4 parts,

gear stick, shifting rod, and an adjusting rod at the other end of the shifting rod with a ball joint on each end (all of which i understand)

last part, haynes and etka are calling the push rod. it runs under the shifting rod, encapsulates the gear stick bearing/nylon ball at one end and then runs forwards, through the same gaiter as the shifting rod, to the gearbox.

shifting rod with yellow 'X' on it
push rod with red 'dots' on it

what does the 'push rod' do??????

mine does not seem to do anything......... nothing at all........ it certainly is jointed as if to be able to move in all directions..

might have come loose? there is a clamped join half way down. will get it over a pit soon to have a look but wanted to know what its for first.

thanks.........
