Space saver information

As the Star attendees may recall, I was wondering why I couldn't fit my space saver in along the side of the boot and had to put it where the normal size spare would sit instead.

On inspection, it turned out my spare was a 125/90 15, while the ones that fit properly are 125/70 15.

However, when you consider rolling circumference, although mine is a larger tyre and this makes its boot placement different, mine is a much closer match to the fitted tyre size-and is in fact identical to the 225/50 tyres that some ur owners use.

While I'd like to tuck it in against the side of the car, I prefer to have a spare that matches better to cause less stress on the diffs.

On a long journey, I'd use a full size spare so i can just carry on the trip as usual, but on short/local/everyday trips I'm happy to keep the current one.

When I got home I checked mine. Also 125/90/15!
It also won t fit under the electric ariel. I thought it was the ariel that was wrong

Incidentally, you can get 125/85r15 tyres which are just about the best match you are going to get for the rolling circumference to match a 215/50r15 tyre.

Isnt that strange? 125/70 is a lot smaller than the 215/50 tyres and even more smallerer than a 205/60!
It would give the differential something to do...and I would not want to lock them up using that spare!

Incidentally the 125/90 is also a damn good match for the 205/55 tyres I have on.
Maybe 125/85 tyres were not available in the time when the tyre size changed.

Regardless, I have just bought a 125/85 tyre to use. It comes on a GM wheel which I think has a different pcd. I will post when I’ve tried fitting it on the car-and also in the boot of the car!

Also-why can Tapatalk not handle apostrophes?

Theyre just designed to get you home or to a garage.
Dont worry about the size difference over short journeys I dont think an open diff would give a hoot about it.

Yes-Fine for short journeys or a quick drive to a garage to buy a new tyre, but not so great when your trip is 300 miles or when your tyre size is 215/50.15

I will stick to my plan. Space saver for short trips, full size for longer trips.

Yes, this. And they’re only meant to go on the rear I believe.

Ooh. News to me-but makes a lot of sense.
So you would have to jack the car up twice if you had a flat front.

Also, 205/55x15 tyres have practically the same circumference as 225/50x15.
