Default The dreaded heater matrix

So I suddenly started getting a hissing sound and steam from behind the dashboard of my B4 coupe. Pulled over and called the AA.

AA guy bypassed the matrix using a wee bit of copper pipe.

But he thinks there is a serious airlock somewhere - he kept adding water to the expansion tank and when it heated up it still wasn't reaching the top hose. He kept squeezing it and he could feel there was no liquid flowing through it.

But when I looked in the passenger side footwells they were totally saturated. Does all this point towards the matrix going?

And will I be safe to drive it?

It certainly sounds like it may well be. Did you also suffer with a smeery oily type substance on the windscreen as well?

Can't say I did. The heater actually was working pretty well up to when the stream started pouring in!
