Default Audi 100 90G polish/wax

Dear Coxy,

I'm probably getting this off my folks for Christmas:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...tegoryrn_31443

I want to clean and polish and wax my car, which is my daily driver.

The paint is in not too bad condition, a bit swirly and a few "hedge down country lanes" scratches.

How about polishing it with Autoglym SRP (cheaper in Tesco than Halfords!)? Or what would you recommend?

Is it worth getting a clay bar and doing that first?

What is Mer and what do you reckon to it? I've used it in the past cos its so easy and quick by hand, and you can do it in direct sunlight. Is it a silicone polish?

Cheers,

Steve

I've seen some excellent results from that machine. One of the lads off the S2 forum did his S2 with one of those prior to entering her to ADI this year and looked stunning.
Not a fan of ARP mainly because it contains fillers which will mask any defects such as swirling. It will look ok when you have just given her a polish but after and week and she;ll be back to how she was. My motto is do it once and do it right.
Mer is pretty much the same to be honest.
You can get good results with Autoglyms Super resin Polish though and it will look superb once she's done.

What would you recommend for an average car (bit dull and swirly) to get a decent, long-lived finish? I tend to go to town with the rags and bottles once every 6 months or so but usually use:
3M finess-it. - Met someone who recommended this, if the car is really bad I sometimes use t-cut first, to clear the oxidation. (VW tornado red anyone?)

I then follow with either Autoglym SRP or Mer or (wait for it) turtle wax green stuff..
All these are bottles collected over the years, the turtle wax was a give-away at a B&Q sale...

What I tend to find is that the car looks quite nice for a few weeks and then it just sort of goes so-so...

Are there mainstream or easily available products that are really better/ worth the extra?
I kind of tune out when I see a bottle with nano-technology doodah and micro tiddly-pom.

Oh - I don't have a mechanical buffer, just a sore arm after a couple of hours...

3M Finesse stuff is the dog danglies!!!

If you've got that then your Tornado red paint will live to see another yer!!

The main problem is getting it to work properly if you are doing it by hand you could never recreationte what a machine can do and it takes an age for the polish to properly break down if doing it by hand.

So what I should do is ask for a polisher for Christmas too? Never even thought of getting one before...

Is the Finesse-it good enough as a 'one-size-fits-all' polish before putting on wax? Maybe rather than SRP I should get some carnauba (sp?) based stuff - this is meant to be longer lived isn't it?

Forgive my lack of basic knowledge here - I'm good at spannering but body finishing has always played second fiddle. Am keen to learn though...

I am getting the polisher for Christmas cos I want to make my cars "shiny" and protected, as I normally wash them once a month and apply some polish by hand every 6 months or so and it makes my arm ache like buggery.

I might look out this "FInesse" stuff.

It has taken me this long to realise polish and wax aren't the same thing too!

How about having a "newbie" show and shine????

We've done a couple of Detailing demo days at my unit in the past. Very useful if you wanna get the most out of your polish.

First good step is to realise that wax and polsih are 2 different things. Next step is working out which wax suits.
2 best waxes are Menzerna and 3M Finess-it. Both are about the same price.

to be honest, if you were to buy this sampling kit from CleanyourCar then you'd have all the polishes you need for a while and can see which one suits your car best

even better as they are doing a xmas special off on it at the moment.

yep. as a rule, I use Sonus grey, but I've got some clay bar off my local Autosmart rep the other month and seems pretty good.
The main key with using claybar is lube lube lube!!

Bought myself some bonnets today, some microfibre ones for putting polish/wax on and some synthetic wool ones and terry towelling ones. Dirt cheap too.

I've wrapped them up for Christmas.....

to myself from my Wife, but she doesn't know.

Then again, she just wandered in and read this post and said to quote "you wierdo...."

Love you too darling......
