At 1st I was up for,having ago myself.
When we were alot younger,my Brother resprayed his Mk1 Escort himself.He used a cheap electric sprayer(From Argos,I think?).For the equipement he had,He did a really good job.
Having 2nd thoughts,because it's metallic.Isn't it harder to,spray metallic paint?And then you have to,lacquer it.

thats the roof of my 80 i did back in 2012 , ive still the rest to do at some stage when i get round to it , didnt cost much tbh, think the paint was 24quid per litre maybe and then thinners and hardener , the paint isnt even very expensive stuff either , a paint job is only as good as the care it receives after its done and expensive paint is simply unjustified , bit like branded clothing in my eyes at times an unwarranted extra cost

its no harder really tbh to do metallic , sort out the spray pattern from the gun and dont have it too hazy or patchy lines in it when putting on the basecoat, i always lay on a light coat 1st then lay on the next coat as wet as i can if its silvers or light colours when i do metallic , the lacquer i do similar i try to have a max of 3-4 coats of lacquer on when im done the first being more or less just a sticky coat to begin,and then on the last coat a wee bit of rocket added to help set it off ,, id avoid lacquer by upol as its sh*t imo , i used to use lesonal a lot its not expensive and gives good results, theres another brand too il check the name for you its good quaility for the money too , used Max Meyer a few times and its top gear , but very expensive as a kit iirc , i was actually thinking on doing the sport in basecoat and using lesonal lacquer but i was lazy then and never bothered LOL

a decent gun helps too , we have a few Devilbiss guns one of them 20odd years old and still a cracker , but ironically when i painted the roof of the sport it was 3am and i was tired and used our 70quid undercoat gun by mistake good job the guns are always kept spotless !! , which only goes to prove that expensive gear or price tags are not always needed , i do a wee bit of painting more as a hobby than anything else and theres a lot that would have you believe that big money = a top job and bad equipment = rubbish results ,,,, not the case at all , regardless of how expensive equipment is , its only ever as good as the man using it is able

i actually seen a lad on another forum just recently blowing his trumpet lookig for a good painter to do his car as he was so fussy , he was rambling about money not being an object at all to have the job done as he wanted , he was seriously under the illusion that the more he pays the better the job would be bad state of affairs when thats how some think

visit a couple of body shops, ask for a quote for it and have a look at work they have done.... im sure there are plenty to choose from over there if its anything like here, but as willie says, just cause its expensive doesnt mean its quality.. another thing is that some body men dont like it when the filling and primer have been done by some one else.. they dont know whats under it and could show through or blister up after and look as if it was work they had done that wasnt up to scratch, so ask them about that too before yo make a deal..

Theres bodyshops in london that will plastidip your car for £300!
I would not mind having a crack at it myself after watching that video, looks pretty simple.

had to check in the garage what lacquer it is we use atm , its Omicron we use for most atm Karl , decent gear and good value with excellent results too if used right either that or lesonal and you cant go wrong with the finish for the money , but def stay away from U-pol clearcoat at any rate

we used to use stuff a few years back aswell i cant remember the name , the tins were orange and black and the writing was in german , was excellent stuff too , our supplier just doesnt do it anymore , damned if i can remember the name though

Prices for resprays and body work are all over the place, I have had quotes for between £1k and £4 1/2k for the rear qtr repair and respray on the Quattro cabby which is part of the reason it's still stuck in my garage...

You tend to get what you pay for when it comes to paintwork, as with many things.

yep some places are on the moon as far as prices are concerned , the job at 4.5k doesnt mean that its the best either when it comes to paintwork

quite the opposite tbh Tony , seen many a show car paint job that i wouldnt put my name too , and seen a lot of top end bodyshops with many years experience and with ovens put out work less than perfect , maybe im fussy but thats plain and simple the truth, paying big does not always reap a better job

i worked in a dealer for long enough to see some good work and some utterly disgusting work having to be re done , ive seen cars come from uk with supposedly 3-4k paint jobs and they were just ok imo , some of the best work ive seen over here has come from a few chaps that dont have a proper oven but a unit built from panelling in the corner of the bodyshop, and on the other hand some of the fellas over here that set up in the good times with all the fancy gear and ovens are turning out pure dirt work over and over again ,, there is no black art to painting regardless of what some pros would like people to believe

I've had two quotes off people I know are real good for a colour change one was £1000 and one was £4500 (worked for McLaren so thinks people are made of money) and I also got a quote off some that isn't very good and that was £2500 so price doesn't always mean a good job
