a mate had trouble with bleeding an a4 and he had to raise the reservoir above the level of the dash, also was a bleed hole in the top heater matrix pipe where it enters the cab, he had to slide the rubber hose back enough to uncover the hole

Try to raise the front of the vehicle. Jack it up or drive on ramps. For some cars does the trick.

So I've had another play around today, still can't get it sorted. I removed the reservoir and held above dash level, tilted it and so on for about an hour. A bit of air came out but still cold. In the process of putting the reservoir back I split the lower bendy hose (8D0121109G). Can I get hold of one of these? Can I fook! Any ideas on where to source one from? I managed to hack some spare water hose from my breakers with the right angles and dimensions and is a good replacement. Modern bloody cars

So an update. Finally got heat at all times
I spent a full day flushing the coolant system (around 12 in total!) including using a coolant flushing agent. it was a pain in the a**! The procedure was Remove scuttle and disconnect the return pipe from the matrix remove left intercooler pipework to gain access to bottom rad hose remove expansion tank cap, remove bottom hose and drain. connect every thing back up, fill, run until up to temp and bleed. Cool then drain Repeat until clear. Add coolant flush. run at 2000rpm for 20 min Repeat above steps until clear. As a note the water pump has a bleed screw on top too Now at this point I was getting pretty fed up, still no heat on idle. But at one point during the fill, heat and bleed after the coolant flush I didn't fully connect the bottom hose. This caused air to be sucked in and the expansion tank to bubble, during this it must have dislodged loads of crap in the system and into the tank... Hey presto, heat on idle after the final bleed process. It was a stroke of look and think the car took pity on me! Happy days |

It was Wynns coolant flush. I actually think the flushing agent was crap as I didn't really see much material in the coolant after running with it or it might be the fact there was TOO much muck in my system to shift it, who knows? If I had to do it again I would choose another product as I've never really been a fan of Wynns stuff anyway, it was just easily available at the time I needed some.
