Switching the ecu among common engine families is not uncommon. A manufacture will make an ecu to fit all geographic areas it sells to and simply burn an internal chip for the specific country it is to be used in. Economies of scale dictate this.

The EPA (environMENTAL protection agency) in the US will test a car for emissions by putting it on a dyno. This method does not take into effect wind resistance, hills, etc. They must also meet broad ranges in temperature and altitude.

An ecu calibrated for another country will work, although the fuel and ignition maps will differ. This difference may be why two identical cars from different countries will not have identical PS figures.

This is my theory behind the idea swapping the ecu.

Think if the cars in Michigan you'll get away with running anything you like, its not as though you have to put it through a yearly test there for emissions like other states.

You are absolutely correct. Though I do wish we did have safety and emissions testing for vehicle registration. Some the smoking heaps with bald tires and parts dragging need to be banned. I was stopped behind a car last week that was running so rich my eyes began to tear up by the time the light changed.

You are so right the ones that make laugh and usually F150's or Dodge Rams pickups with the greenhouse strapped to the back or the conversion vans. Driving around with so much rust that theres almost next to no front fenders or outer sills......

Martc,

What motor does your Coupe Quattro have, and is it modified?
