I'd say that to purists it doesn't.

Those slightly computer-style fonts first appeared in about 1981 and were not strictly legal from the off; enforcement was slack though, partly because many were dealer-supplied (so an argument would have followed) and perhaps also because there were no cameras of whatever sort which might struggle to read them.

They largely died out by the end of the '80's so yours are probably later replacements, though why in that font is anyone's guess.

oddly, they are dealer plates, as near as I can tell.

I'd say it would have been very unusual for a VAG dealer to have been issuing plates with that font as standard in 1992 or later - special request maybe?
