Thanks Dave,

Interestingly, F440JVS spent time at a workshop in St Clears which is not far from you.

There’s loads of stuff tucked away in sheds, yards and buildings down there. Saw a couple of Mk2 Vauxhall Astra GTE rally cars in Tregaron (one on the road) and several cars of interesting shape under tarps. One, I’d guess was a wide arch Mitsubishi Starion with rally lamps on the front and another was a Mk2 Escort with cage. In Tal-y-bont up the “dog walk lane” was a Mk2 Golf GTI 2 door that had been used as a grass track car “back in the day” complete with home made cage and metal mesh windscreen. Now rusting away alongside some vintage tractors. In Tregaron there’s also a garage stuffed full of those hideous Ford Scorpio bug eyed things, literally a dozen of them and an equally horrible one eyed tabby cat on guard dog duty.

Nice to see the holiday snaps in Wales- overdue another visit myself- tho' I'm a castle fanatic so you can imagine how spoilt for choice I am when in Wales ! We have a lot of dams up here in the Highlands- have you checked any of them out?
Interesting to hear your take on the stronic gearbox too- I nearly bought an S5 this year but the gearbox, despite me actually wanting an automatic for 1st time in my life, put me off despite a lengthy testdrive and chose a cheaper A4 quattro manual that I had all the 'chocolate' parts upgraded and power remapped to funnily enough probably same as your S3 - it's supposed to be a family car

I think that's a very fair assessment of the S-tronic gearbox, it was fitted to my Sportback (only 1.4T variant though)

It's a great piece of kit but not without its flaws.

As you say, unless bumbling about town or motorway miles, more often than not I used to find myself in manual mode. Only trouble I found was needing to grab a gear when using quite a lot of lock - difficult with the paddles so opted for a quick stick shift.

Lol... absolutely, as I read my post I thought I’ve missed the “where’s the paddle, find the paddle “ conundrum and the left hand ‘bang it forward ‘ with the stick... BUT... a couple of times after long periods in manual I’ve dropped back into ‘D’ then gone onto the paddles which sets manual for several seconds and then banged it up using the shifter.... which is still in ‘D’ so takes ‘N’ neutral instead.

It’s so complicated it’s like the crypton factor.

Now you see you’re showing off, we have to drive best part of 7 hours to see that. You can bumble out your back door and be there...

What I’d really, really, rather like to do is have a long weekend at some point in the future with similar likeminded Quattro owners doing an Elan Valley tour similar to our 2009 Isle of Man tour.
