Question Calling all engine tuning Guru's

Hey all,

Can someone tell me the difference between this http://www.034motorsport.com/engine-...d-p-13780.html

And the likes of the 272 cam from Schrick?
Other than Name and price? Or is there a difference?

I see piper do one also but like shrick it is over £300.......

Tia.

Think you've answered your own question. The name Schrick is directly related to it's price I fancy and 40 odd years involved in motorsport engine development. From the spec they look like they all do more or less the same job, it's just down to the choice of which sticker you want on the engine cover and how much you are wanting to spend.

034 is very close to where I am and they make a lot of great parts but I am not sure where they source their cams. I have a http://techtonicstuning.com/ 272 cam and I love it. The price was great and I have had great results with it. The Schrick cams are very nice but I couldnt justify the price. I have really heard to stay away from Blau cams because their grinds were very inconsistent when they were getting them from their supplier. Techtonics also makes a very nice adj. cam gear that I also run .... it is listed for the 8v but works fine with the 10v 5cyl. I honestly wouldnt buy a cam without an adj. cam gear in my opinion.

Your probably right, i want it all ways though, i want more torque, but i still want it as smooth as possible! Was just curious was there subtle differences in them to make one smoother than the other, but price is the biggest factor, sticker is not important as it will go on the toolbox not the car lol

How is yours at idle? what engine is in your car ie NG etc, gonna show my ignorance here but why do we need the adjustable gear?

Ps. Am i looking in the right place here lol, i'm not interested in an increase in top end or higher up the rev range, its of no use to me in normal day to day use, after all the legal maximum speed limit is 70, it would be nice to be able to get there quicker tho lol

If I may – In my many years in motorsport and specialist tuning we/I only ever used Schrick cams. I have fitted dozens and dozens and have experience of hundreds of engines with them fitted. I have never ever known one to fail or deliver anything short of what they should.
I cannot comment on other makes in particular but its worth bearing in mind some cheap cams are simply ‘refrofiled’ and as such their reliability is suspect. Schrick only use genuine blanks and are 101% reliable. Fit and forget.

You have to remember that "smooth" pretty much goes out the door when adding a more aggressive cam into your mix (at least at idle). I have a 2.2 JT code and it idles lumpy but nothing that I cant handle for a daily driver. The importance of a quality and consistent grind is important here and yes some are better than most in this area.... Like I noted I have had an amazingly great experience with the Techtonics cam but I am in the U.S so the Schrick is a bit harder to come by here and they are into the 500$ range. The Techtonics is a very smooth cam and in addition to the 034 lightweight lifters I have really is like butter when I am moving up the RPM range.

You have to remember that a cam is a fantastic upgrade but it is designed to hold internals open longer so your fuel econ will drop a bit.
I suggest the cam gear because it will allow you to retard or advance the cam timing independently and thus allows you to "move" the cam performance up or down the RPM range so you can really dial in where your cam comes alive. I wouldnt do a cam unless I had the adjust-ability personally.

All and all a cam is a great upgrade and it helps move my little JT about nicely but you will sacrifice some smoothness at idle and some fuel economy.

I like the idle too personally.... I have been asked many times if I have a "Chevy 350" in my car at stop lights by people who have no clue. It always makes me laugh

Thanks guys you have givin food for thought!

I had noticed the piper one is a 268...... im assuming this would be a touch smoother?
I guess what i really need is to actually meet someone with an upgraded cam in their car, to take me for a spin to see if i like it first lol.
