CQ propshaft centre mount
Help!
I have been trying to get a propshaft centre mount for my Type 85 10V CQ for ages now. Basically the rubber has cracked. I have been to a scrappy near me and they had 10 identical prop shafts, all 1 inch too long! The 3 they did have of the correct size all had the same broken centre mount as mine. So I’m asking does anybody have a spare centre mount/bearing for said prop shaft, or Does anybody have a robust method for fixing the centre mount bearing and rubber cradling device? I thought of glue, but that’s not going to work very well! Please help, my car has been off the road (for a clutch change, amongst other problems!) for nearly 4weeks now and I keep driving the S2 everyday to work! Cheers, Phil |

Are they NLA then? If not how much do the dealers want for one.

Hi Phil,
I had a similar problem with my 200; I ended up stripping two props and swapping the good centre bearing onto my own prop; you might have to do the same! I also had problems measuring mine....... I don't know what type of joints the CQ uses, but the CVs used on the 200 will move "in and out" more than 1"..... The props off of my two cars (KG and 1B)measured differently, but the gap between 'box and rear diff was the same on both. I then discovered the movement in the joints. AlanB |

Sounds interesting Alan, maybe i should go back to that breaker's yard and see if I can get one of those other props. I'll have to have good fiddle around with them and see if they'll fit my car.
Update- Taking the centre mount off my old prop litterally distroyed the UJ (I took it appart and was left with 4 end 'caps' and a load of needle roller bearings! Back to the scrappy it is then! |

the propshaft is only available from Audi as a complete unit but the centre bearing can be bought seperatly as a BMW part and CV joints are same as PORSCHE 911.
Pretty sure that German & Swedish do the centre bearing for around £16. see link for part numbers:- http://members.aol.com/c1j1miller/trans.html#R&R |

This lot may be worth a try, they sorted me out some CV joints for a quattro prop and the rubber boot bits, they will mail order (or did a few years back).

prop
I was told you had to buy the whole prop with all the bits attached as it comes from Audi as a balanced unit. Imagine if you upset the balance you'll get lots of unwanted vibrations unless you know someone who can re-balance it after you have replaced all the joints and centre bearing.
I was lucky with mine as they were asking over £400 for it 12 years ago and then 3 years later it was down to £270 which is what I paid. Not sure what the price is now if it is available at all. |

Hi Guys,
As long as the big bits go back together in the same relation to one another, the bearing should not make an significant difference to the balance. It is certainly unlikely to be worse than running with a wrecked centre mount! With prices quoted as £16 for the bearing and ~£400 for a prop, I would try it and see! If there is a balance problem, then the already mentioned "Recoprop" (Or a local specialist!) can rebalance for considerably less than the price of a new prop. If the bearing is actually OK, and only the rubber mount is damaged, it might be worth filling the voids in it with structural silicone (Sikaflex, or similar!) We always did that with the rally car props (before they tore!) to give them some chance of living through the forests. If the rubber is well cleaned, it sticks amazingly well. However, the new centre mount may be cheaper! AlanB |
