It might be worth checking the ignition amplifier if it's not sparking but thats where John needs to take over,
he should be a wizard with checking ohms with meters to check different items.

Not sure about the V6 engines Mark, but likely checkable with multimeter on dwell setting?

Thing is I am not even a good 'amateur' mechanic, so anything like this is just beyond me. I like the Audi 80's, I just don't have a lot of time to work on them when they go wrong (or skill).

Ah well.. thanks for the info and help nonetheless.

I know the basics John but thats where my electrical knowledge ends. I have a meter here i bought 28 years ago just to do dwell, definitely overkill but the Vorsprung durch Technik in me was lurking.
Do you reckon this would cover most things undertake bonnet and around the car if i taught myself?

The other concern now is that I suspect the cam (hall) sensor was probably ok and now I have probably buggered that too. So its likely a 2 fold problem now.

What I have learned with old car ownership - stick to what you know!

Been following this thread with interest audi80fan...
Now here's the thing: whilst I have no idea what's causing your non-start issue (your 80 has a completely different engine to mine and I've only ever owned the one Audi 80!), I can/will offer you some advice -

1. the guys on here have been incredibly helpful in diagnosing and advising me on how to fix the many issues that I myself have had with my 80 during the past year or so because like you, my mechanical skills are/were limited; they've even provided step-by-step instructions/videos when I've asked them (nicely of course!)

2. the only way to learn about Classic Audi's is to get stuck in and to get your hands dirty, so c'mon lad, pick your chin up off the floor and as the saying goes "get 'er done!" - if I can do it, well so can you!

You-Tube would give you a bit of info on basic checks perhaps?

Yes it transpires your hall sender of 2 years old is probably fine. You mentioned the job went well. How did you bugger the hall sender?
