Default 2.8 12v Head gasket

Hi folks,

I have a sneaky feeling one of the head gaskets is on the way out on my A6. How big a job is it on these? I have been a 5 cylinder head before this one so have little clue about these engines. Is this a common job to do on them?

It is early days and might not need to do for some time so just trying to get some info first. I think it could be the right bank (looking from front) judging from this bank is hotter than left and if I ever see a tell tale puff it is from the left pipe looking from back. On normal running it is not using water at all but starts to heat up if stuck in traffic for a while. I have replaced thermostat/water pump and various other coolant parts. Gauge sits at 90 steady even when it starts to heat up in header tank which is a little strange.

Any help/advice welcomed.

Headgasket how to on 12v.org

http://12v.org/maintenance/repairs/headgasket.php

You need a few specific tools for the cams for the timing belt

When something is wrong with V6 head gasket, that means you're replacing two head gaskets.

As for your gauge - you have A6, not A100 - needle of your gauge is pointing at 90 when temp sender reads between 80 and 95 degrees - maybe you also have failing Behr temp sender, when dying, they usually reads approx 10 degrees less than it is in reality.

Perfect thanks for info folks. Just checked my oil and it is as clean as a whistle. A little confused. I might try some other simple stuff first.

Cheers
