Default 40 years of the WRC

Why do people repeatedly say, "Toivonen was the only man to tame the S4" or words to that effect?

Have they forgotten Markku Alen? A guy who should have been world champion, and made driving the S4 a memorable spectacle to say the least.

A good video Chris, interesting that Juha said he thought that the Peugeot was easier to drive than the Lancia, which just goes to show how much harder the S4 drivers were having to work.

Here's a good video I discovered ages ago, no music or commentary featuring the T16 in the first half and the S4 in the second. Footage a bit ropey sadly:

I love Juha. Proper legend. I remember some cockend interviewing him back in the day. "What were your tyres like?". " Black and round", or words to that effect. Enough said. I also remember an old friend of a friend who worked as a paramedic on the WRC rally back in the day. Kenneth Eriksson spent ages faffing about in the car before doing his thing. "Juha, we are ready." came the shout. He calmly finished his cigar, got in the car, minimal if any faffing about with the seat etc, then went on to blitz Kenneth's time. Another time he was interviewed about the conditions. " Very slippy.", came his reply. No shit. One of the all time greats, no question.

A proper legend indeed. Here's a couple of great bits of onboard footage from his Toyota days. Sit back and enjoy....
