Cheers guys,
Found the sensor, it was connected, cleaned it up, but still doesn't work!
Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Single wire so will be NTC type, just short out the wire to see if the gauge goes up. If yes the sender's knackered, otherwise problem is elsewhere.

pretty sure there is a connector behind the driver side headlight for this wire which sometimes gives a bad connection

I thought it as just a single wire that went along the sump back towards the starter wiring Mike?

It goes into that loom yes.

I know my quattro had problems with a connection behind that headlamp for the oil temp sender. It's possible the cq doesn't have that same setup
