No idea, I checked it a month ago and it was fine, not that means anything, will get a look tomorrow. I shall have to borrow one of Worzel's clever heads for the job!

its the vacuum booster on the side of the head before you go wasting your money as for the over heating just had the exact problem on my audi 80 and the cylinder head was cracked on internally causing water to not circulate but giving the illusion of a thermostat or water pump problem.
the vacuum booster can be removed and blanked off with a plate from a KV engine I believe, maybe someone can confirm this but I know it can be removed as I did it when I had my 90 but I cant remember if I used a plate from a KV Last edited by jamiecoysh; 20-02-15 at 09:40 PM. |

pushrod in brake vacuum
I agree, sounds like the pushrod in the brake vacuum pump, just take it out and try running without it. Probably bit of shit making piston in pump stick allowing pushrod to chatter back and forth.

Only just seen this thread. My friend has a cq b2. He was getting a weird rattling noise, had always wanted to change the tappets, so he decided to do them. One tappet had disintegrated, and bits were inside loose, luckily they didnt go anywhere. Replaced - all sorted. Not saying its the same case for yours, but worth investigating.

hydraulic tappets don't/highly unlikely to fail completely, the oil traveling through them may become slightly resisted with age causing a tapping sound on start up that if doesn't go away after a minute of driving could point to needing to be replaced. The problem is 100% the vacuum booster or I would be investigating this before going further

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the replies. As yet no news is still bad news (Maybe i'm a cup half empty guy lol) I have been (hopefully only) temporarily reduced to driving this as my daily driver until the 90 is diagnosed one way or the other. The seems to have more wrong with it than the noise, it is sitting out at my mechanic friends, after being recovered by the rac a few weeks back, it starts and runs for a few minutes then dies. We are thinking that is fueling related but as yet have not come to any conclusions. I will keep you up to date with what I know, when i know Again guys thanks for the pointers. Greatly appreciated! Well folks, after accepting for months that ~I had Tappets or little ends on the way out. I bumped into an old mechanic at P&R Motors when I was going to get some oil this evening. He was able to tell me that the vacuum booster was done. To test his theory he had me pump the brake pedal whilst it was making that racket, hey presto, the noise disappeared. He advised me to take it off and bin it, it was never really needed anyway, and if it was even still available they where about £600 anyway. I checked with parts and he was right, NLA. So thats this weekends entertainment sorted. I may however dissect it for shits and giggles and see if I can't maybe repair it. Just so all of you who where kind enough to reply know the score! |
